There’s an old saying that goes “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. It’s a nice saying, but few people ever find a job that they love that much. For most people, it’s not really the job that’s the problem, it’s everything that comes with it; the daily commute, the stuffy cubicle, the nosy or irritating co-workers, the bad canteen food and the stressful schedule.

Strike up the band! It's time to play some sweet music to the tune of profits! The good news is that you don't have to know how to play a musical instrument, nor do you have to go out and buy a set of drums, driving the rest of your household and neighbours completely bonkers to make money. Having a successful commercial venture on the Internet does require knowing how to play its tune and it's a multipart melody that in its complexity, rivals some of the Baroque masterworks of Beethoven or Mozart. Yes, it has really become that sophisticated. There was a time, not that long ago, that having a commercial presence on the Web was both a relatively simple affair similar to a two-part melody. It really only required a well-designed website, that provided attractive graphics and text that explained what the company did, what it had to offer and even had a page where people could actually buy on the spot. The only other thing that was left to do was to make sure that the page had the proper keywords that people would be looking for when they searched for one's products or services and voila’, Internet success. If only it was that simple today, but it's not.

If it sounds like I parted with nearly everything I own, you’re completely right. Around six weeks ago I made the decision to move to Hawai’i, using income earned through freelance writing to get me there. Since that time I’ve been moving at a breakneck speed towards obtaining that goal, and I’m happy to say I’ve quit my day job, donated nearly all of my belongings, and joined the growing population of laptop nomads around the world. More and more companies are allowing their employees to work from home, and while this can be a great way to save money on commuting, it also poses its risks of hindering productivity. With your television, bed and family only a few feet away from you, you may find yourself slacking at your job, and if you slack too much, you may find yourself out of a job. If you are able to work from home, here are a few tips to help you maximize productivity so that you can keep your job.
