There’s an old saying that goes “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. It’s a nice saying, but few people ever find a job that they love that much. For most people, it’s not really the job that’s the problem, it’s everything that comes with it; the daily commute, the stuffy cubicle, the nosy or irritating co-workers, the bad canteen food and the stressful schedule. Free Yourself From the Cubicle If you want to really enjoy your job, then getting out of the cubicle is a good start, and if you can do so by becoming your own boss, then that’s even better. The days of “one job for life” are over – they’ve been over for many years. The chances of you starting your working career as a tech support agent in a big company and moving your way up to team leader, department head, and so on until you’re running an entire branch are almost non-existent. If you want to be the boss of a successful company, the best way to make that happen is to start the company themselves. What’s Your Ambition? Working from home and running your own business has a lot of benefits – instead of having a boss, you’ll have clients. Instead of having co-workers, you’ll have employees (if you choose to have them), and instead of having to drive to work every day, you just roll out of bed and sit down in front of the computer. However, working from home has downsides. You’ll have to figure out how much to charge, you’ll have to find enough clients to cover your living costs and sustain the lifestyle you want to enjoy, and you’ll have to handle taxes, record keeping, and maintaining a work-life balance. Some people launch their own business with the hope of seeing it take off, then selling it for a nice lump sum. This is great, if you’ve got the right idea, the right skills, and enough drive to see the business through those difficult early stages. Some people take a different approach, though, starting a “lifestyle business” – something that has a low turnover, low running costs, and makes just enough money to allow them to pay the bills. If you don’t have expensive hobbies, and your main motivation for starting your own business is to have more free time, then this is a good option. Self Employment isn’t For Everyone Working for yourself is a big decision, and it’s not something that suits everyone. Some people struggle with the feeling of isolation that comes from not being part of a big office. Some people struggle to stay motivated when they don’t have someone watching over them and holding them accountable. For others, the temptation to work all hours of the day becomes too great, and they end up burning out after just a few months. If you can overcome those potential hurdles, however, then choosing your own schedule, your own clients, and your own path in life is brilliant feeling. The opportunities are there, all you have to do is decide to take action and strike out on your own. Photo: meddygarnet
