There are many reasons to work online, and many things that make the prospect an enticing one. For some it's the freedom of speech, for others it's the ability to work from home and not have to make tiring commutes in the rain, and for others still it's the lack of a boss. While all these things are important though, it's fair to say that they all add up to essentially the same thing – freedom. Whether it's creative freedom, financial freedom or freedom of movement – working online can grant you all these things and it can help you to live as nature intended – without rules or restrictions. If you look at the way that most people live their lives, it tends to involve getting up early every morning, making a long commute to work, then sitting in a confined space getting told what to do. They earn a set salary over this time which ensures that their options are still limited in their spare time, and they're often too tired to then do much of anything when they get back. Free as the grass grows? Hardly... But this doesn't have to be the case, and if you do manage to start earning a living online then you'll find that you can actually achieve a very real kind of freedom. Here we will look at how you can do this and at how working online can really equate to being more free... Freedom of Expression Most jobs have you doing what you're told and this often won't be very creative – you'll be handling complaints, counting numbers, or entering data and it can all feel a little inflexible. Even if you do have a creative job as a writer or artist, you will be forced to write about what you're told to, or draw what you're told to – whereas when you have a site you're the boss and you literally can write exactly what you want to write and express any opinion you happen to hold. Freedom of Movement I couldn't think of a better way to put this... but basically you can work anywhere you want when you're self employed online and that doesn't just have to mean working at home. If you feel the need to head out to the pub to work, or to go travelling around the world, you can do any of those things and still bring in a steady profit. And actually freedom of movement is kind of apt too – if you want to get up and have a dance then you're free to do that. Freedom of Action When you work for yourself you also of course don't need to answer to anyone else which means that if you should want to, you are perfectly entitled to finish work early on a Wednesday, go clubbing with friends and then get up late in the morning the next day. Achieving That Freedom To get this kind of freedom from working online then you need to work in such a way that you earn 'passive income'. Essential passive income means income that you amass without having to work consistently. In other words, if you're asleep and earning money – such as from AdSense or app sales – then this is passive income. At the same time to have this kind of freedom you need to make sure that you don't *have* to do a set amount of work per day. This means that if you have clients, you don’t want to have strict deadlines. Having clients in some capacity though can be very useful as a way to achieve financial freedom as it means you can work harder and earn more money on a day where you need more cash if necessary.
