A lot of us like to spend our spare time to pursue activities that are purely pleasure oriented. On the other hand, others need to use even spare time to make money. There are two major approaches to making money. The first approach is saving in all possible ways, while the second is working a second job. But the best way of utilising your spare time is making money by pursuing a particular hobby. That way, you would get paid for doing what you would do anyway. The first thing that you need to remember is that your hobby will in most cases not allow you to quit your day job. Rather, it would become a source of income that will allow you to sustain your hobby and supplement your income.
Keeping this in mind, choose a hobby that you love. Do not choose something that you think will provide money in the future because that will reduce the enjoyment you gain from your hobby. So if you love writing and gaming, you could write a blog or column about the games you love. Sometime in the future, this information may be used to earn some money. Try not to force money from your hobby. If you’re passionate about carpentry, you could mention this in conversation at appropriate points. You could even point out pieces of furniture that you built for your home when people visit. This sets the stage for someone to ask you to build furniture when they have a particular need. In case they do, you get paid for doing something you love. Converting hobby into a business is not something to be entered into lightly, as it is liable to take the joy out of your hobby. Remember, if your hobby is something that you have spent hours practising, then it’s highly possible that there’s no one out there with the same skill set that you possess. Do not short sell your abilities or think that your hobby is something that is easily accessible just because you do it. Having this attitude will allow you to even make money by teaching about your hobby to others with the same interest. With the proliferation of the internet, it is easy to get the word out that you maintain a hobby that is productive. Set up a website or blog to showcase your hobby and the fun that you have with it. This will let people sample your work and contact you if they have the same hobby and are interested in purchasing your work.
