Being a stay home mum requires a great deal of dedication, patience and time. For many women, this means making sacrifices. However, being a stay home mum need not mean that you are unable to pursue your own interests and goals. Online studying is now a readily available and widely accessible option for stay home parents, and the possibilities are vast. Many educational institutions will allow for students to study online, leaving the pace and study load up to the student. A growing demographic of stay home mums are discovering that, by taking up study online, they are able to achieve their personal goals and further their education while not having to leave the home or sacrifice time with the kids. Many courses across several different modes of study from varying institutions are available, even for those who have never studied before. University Courses by “Distance Education”Many Australian universities offer courses by distance education. This means that you have the freedom to study a university degree from the comfort of your own home, with a schedule that suits your needs and the demands of your home life. You can choose to begin your academic career anew by studying an Undergraduate course, or if you’ve already completed a tertiary degree, you may further your education with a Postgraduate degree. Many undergraduate degrees have no entry requirements, making a university degree available to anybody willing and able to dedicate their time, effort and determination to it. Online graduates of a university degree are awarded the same tertiary qualification as a student who completes their degree on campus. Likewise, the same government support is offered to distance education students, with commonwealth supported places and scholarships available to online pupils, and access to financial support including FEE-HELP, HECS-HELP, AUSTUDY and ABSTUDY. Undertaking a university course via distance education means that you can tailor your study load to fit your home and family commitments. By studying via distance education through a university, you are provided with study materials and professional guidance by the university as well as being able to interact with your tutors and fellow students online. This allows you to study anywhere, anytime, without the restriction of campus proximity, lecture attendance or tutorial timetables. Online TAFE coursesOnline TAFE courses allow students to study diploma and certificate courses and short courses from the home, at their own pace. A TAFE course can provide opportunities to expand your current skills or embark upon a new career path within a multitude of fields. A TAFE course is a much more short-term commitment for most students than a university degree. Most university degrees take around 3 years to attain if studying full-time, however TAFE offers courses which may be completed in a much shorter period, even when balancing a busy home life with your online study. The pace is up to you. TAFE also runs a number of competitions and scholarships, available to online students as well as those attending classes on campus. Preparatory coursesAlso available online are a number of preparatory courses to help students gear-up with the skills they will need to begin higher education. This may entail brushing-up on your study skills to prepare you for tertiary study, bridging courses to satisfy course entry requirements, or language courses to prepare you for any English language testing you may be required to undertake. These can be a great first step if you’ve never studied before, if you’re lacking any prior learning that you may need to gain entry to a course, or if English is not your first language. By taking these courses online you can choose when and where you undertake your study load. With so many options across a plethora of fields, studying online is now making it achievable and convenient for stay home mums to reach the heights they’ve dreamed of. Whether it’s to advance your education, prepare for a return to the workforce, or simply pursue your passions, online study is only a mouse-click away.
