Every year around the time of CES (consumer electronics show) we see that there are a lot of rumors released on potential Apple products. Now the title of this article says why Apple "won't" make a cheaper iPhone. However, this is more of why they shouldn't or why the typical Apple appeal prevents them from making a cheaper model. So it is no real news, rumors have been hitting every news source that Apple has iPhone 6 on the way coupled with iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 staged for this year. Many sites also report that Apple is making a cheaper version of the iPhone to compete for higher market share with Android devices such as Samsung; which generally offer cheaper alternatives. The first reason that Apple won’t pursue this endeavor is that the company does not go digging on the bottom for extra market share. The brand itself has built up a higher class prestige to it where the whole brand and its product lines have a certain expectation of higher quality. Even though the Samsung Galaxy SIII led the way for the Android market share increase, Apple still reigns supreme in terms of relative marginal revenues. The company is not concerned with the competition of Samsung because brand loyalty and the brand appeal will always bring a lot of users to the platform, or back to the platform.
The second reason is that Apple does not want to cannibalize its own iPhone line. If they release a competitor into their own market they are hurting their bottom lines to only gain a small percentage of the market. So investors would rather see one iPhone 6 this year that drives as much hype and desire as the iPhone 5 did last year. It seems that even though Samsung marketed hard against the iPhone 5 and cracked jokes that it was not as good as the SIII, the consumer proved them incorrect. As did time magazine when iPhone 5 won most influential device of the year. The third reason is a little forward thinking but after some research of items at the CES, i think Apple is building another game changing phone and it is slated on the horizon. If not 2013 then 2014. They have been acquiring a lot of patents as well as some smaller firms so they are planning something big. iPhone 6 will be another hit for sure, but whether or not it’s a game changer is the question we will not find out until about a month before it is released. Apple as a company is a high quality manufacturer and you can see it in the release video of the iPhone 5, all of the hard work and attention to detail that sets them ahead of the rest of the industry.
