One of the key elements for young men and their college experience is that of joining a fraternity on campus. The fraternity will provide them with experiences that they likely would not have should they stay in a dorm room and not socialize on the fraternity level. The fraternity, however, is much different from it is portrayed in movies and on television. It is not focused only around keggers and partying, they also provide support both personally and academically and provide the brothers with leadership skills and opportunities to be a part of an organization that has values and expects the best out of each other. Choosing the right fraternity is almost as important as choosing the right major so here is a list of 10 of the nations top fraternities that you can choose from once you begin your college experience. Phi Kappa Alpha started out in 1868 on the campus of University of Virginia and has since grown to be on more than 200 campuses nationwide and has more than 240,000 members. The Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity continues their starting values of honesty, friendship, honor and loyalty to one another and the fraternity as a whole. They also provide leadership seminars specifically for the brothers of the fraternity at their own Pike University. The Phi Delta Theta fraternity is one of the more difficult fraternity’s to get into due to the high standards the fraternity holds. This fraternity started out with the standards and holds them today which include high moral standards as well as high mental statutes. With people like Burt Reynolds and Neil Armstrong as past brothers of the fraternity, it shows that they hold their standards in high respect. Since another one of the past brothers was also Lou Gehrig, the fraternity began their philanthropy of the ALS Association in 2002. Lambda Chi Alpha was the first fraternity to fight against the typical, stereotypes of fraternities including hazing, alcohol abuse and pledging. Instead, they have always thought that anyone who wants to be in a fraternity should have that chance without the pressure of ridicule or dismissal because the pledger is not good enough for the organization, making it one of the top fraternities in the nation. Kappa Sigma is another fraternal organization that has eliminated hazing and gone a more moral route for their pledges. They promote their brothers to live honestly and honorably, acting as gentlemen and proving to be honorable men in all aspects of their lives. Phi Kappa Psi has the motto: United by friendship, sustained by honor and led by truth. This motto is still true today. The Phi Kappa Psi brotherhood is based on the morals that the founders wanted the organization to hold. The fraternity is known for their philanthropy efforts from the time it began when they were helping those who were victim to a disease outbreak until now when they help out the boys and girls clubs of America. Tau Kappa Epsilon is another different type of fraternity. When determining who should be admitted into this brotherhood, the fraternity places no value on the wealth of the individuals family, instead, they place their decision on the moral values of the individual. This fraternity is said to be the largest known fraternity with chapters spreading across the United States as well as Canada. Sigma Pi Epsilon is one of the few fraternities whose morals and characters are based on loyalty and the love of God and principle of peace. Moral values are what the brothers look at when accepting others into the fraternity instead of money or status. The Sigma Chi Fraternity was founded on a disagreement where the founders decided to leave the other fraternity and begin a new one with their own values. In Sigma Chi, the members are expected to become philanthropists like Brad Pitt who was a past Sigma Chi member. Other past brothers include Mike Ditka, Warren Beaty and John Wayne. Sigma Nu Fraternity was an organization that was founded by students who were attending Virginia Military Academy in 1869. They saw how underclassmen where treated at other fraternities and were appalled at the sight. They sought to abolish the hazing rituals and welcome in anyone who, at the time was a white, non-Jew into their organization. Today, they are much more lenient, allowing any race, creed or religion to participate in their organization. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity is proud of their past brothers including actors like Fred Savage and David Spade on top of the nations 25th president William McKinley among others. The founding fathers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon wanted to keep the fraternity in the south to ensure that their views of being true gentlemen stood up. Today, the fraternity does have chapters nationwide but the foundation of being true gentlemen will always stand true. About the Author Tenny R. is a writer for MyCriminalJusticeCareer.com.
