Image by CollegeDegrees360 These days whenever anyone is looking for a restaurant to try or a trip to book the first thing they do is go to the internet. The common response to any question is, “Google it”.
Reality Before I watch a movie, I hit up Rotten Tomatoes. If I’m looking to buy a camera I compare reviews, stores, and prices online first. Before I go to a bookstore I read reviews written about the book I want, and then check the bookstore’s website to make sure they have it. Not much is left up to chance. This is why the key to a successful business is a great website. Practice Having just moved to a new city I was interested in finding a gym to join, so of course I Googled gyms in my area. I only looked into the first 5 or 6 first links that popped up and spent no more than 5 seconds on 2 of the sites because they just weren’t appealing at all. In the end it came down to 2 places, both of which had great websites, and that’s when I made the decision according to price. What I realized afterwards was that perhaps my priorities when looking for a gym were mistaken. I put an inviting website first, then price, then location. The businesses I dismissed might have been cheaper or closer to my house, but I had judged them on their websites and imagined that because their website wasn’t as good, they wouldn’t be either. Truth The internet is growing and becoming a more essential part of our society every day. Large companies can afford to have entire IT departments that can deal with every technical aspect of their business, such as creating an attractive website that will draw in more customers. Smaller businesses usually can’t afford such a luxury. There is a solution to this however; small business IT support companies. These are companies designed to help smaller businesses enjoy all the advantages large businesses benefit from. According to a study by Amazon every 100 millisecond delay in a website’s loading time results in a 1% drop in sales. In a world where this is true, not having a website at all can mean going out of business – quickly. Without thinking about social media, what sites do you use to make similar day to day decisions?
