Because the economy is not the greatest, people are always on the lookout for a way to make ends meet. A few intrepid souls have come up with a rather unique means of making money--coupons. Traditionally, using coupons was looked upon as a way to save a few cents on a box of cereal or a can of peas, and may shoppers were thrilled if they saved a couple of bucks on their grocery bill. Now some people are actually making a profit by using coupons. Following are a few tips on how to make money with coupons.
You Have to Work At It There is a new phrase associated with making money by using coupons--extreme couponing. As with any meaningful endeavor, if you want to be successful as an ‘extreme couponer’ you have to work at it. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. It takes time, education, and practice to master the ins and outs of making money with coupons. Keep Your Eyes Open Marketing experts have found that Americans are always looking for a deal--a way to save a few pennies. It makes shoppers feel good. As a result, marketers have convinced producers and retailers that they should have sales on a regular basis and that offering coupons is a good promotional tool. So, producing coupons redeemable for specified items has become a standard practice. You can take advantage of this by collecting coupons from various sources. Keep your eyes open. You can find coupons in newspapers, magazines, and grocery store ads, among a variety of other places. Once you train your eyes to look for them, it will be hard to go into a store or read a newspaper without seeing a coupon or two. Print Your Own Another way to collect coupons is to go to online marketplaces and find coupons that you can print yourself. There are many sources of coupons at various online websites, including such places as www.coupons.com, or www.freecoupons.com. Use your web browser’s search engine by typing in something like, ‘coupons online’ and following the links that come up. The number and variety of online coupons is on the rise. It may take some time to find coupons that you can make use of, but if you keep at it you will no doubt find many coupons that will save you money. Not Just for Groceries Because the use of coupons has proven to be a valid sales tactic, it should come as no surprise that coupons aren’t used just for groceries. Many electronic stores have found them useful for attracting business. In some cases, they offer a few items at drastically reduced prices just to get people in the door. Even clothing stores have recognized that offering coupons is a good way to entice people into their store. It’s up to you to be aware of the possible savings, and then find and use the coupons. Buy In Bulk Any business major will tell you that the best way to make money is to buy low and sell high. A good way to do that is to buy in bulk. The reason is that generally the more you buy of any one item, the cheaper it is per unit. Incorporating that into your ‘extreme couponing’ mindset means buying as many boxes of cereal or cans of peas as the store will allow. In that way you save a few cents per item and can stock up. Of course, this method works best for nonperishable items. Resale It is possible to actually make money by reselling the items you purchase with coupons. If you’re one of the fortunate customers to buy a computer that’s on sale, and you’ve combined that with extra savings by using a coupon, you may be able to sell that computer for more than you paid for it. As an example, an electronics store has an overstock of a laptop that is no longer being produced, and they’re expecting a shipment of a ‘new and improved’ version. In order to get rid of the old laptop and free up shelf space, they’ll drastically reduce the price, and maybe entice you into the store with an in-store coupon. When you buy the laptop you’ve saved a significant amount of money off the regular retail price, and you have a brand new computer. If you buy two or three at that price, you may be able to sell a couple and make back your investment, plus a few bucks. Guest post from Chris Black.
