After graduating from college with a GPA that ranked higher than most of my classmates, I expected to land a fabulous job in record time. My spotless college transcripts was a reflection of my integrity, and my impressive resume of internships and volunteer positions was sure to win over my potential new boss, right?

After a while, with no one calling me back about jobs I interviewed for, I began to think they just meant the circular file. You know, the trash can.

Because I needed to pay my rent and at least afford Ramen noodles, I finally started taking on odd jobs in hopes that eventually my luck would change. If it didn’t, then the only thing I would be adding to the post-college section of my resume would be pizza delivery and dog walking.

Luck Turns for the Better

Fortunately my luck did change, and it was for the better! And believe it or not, my luck had nothing to do with delivering pizza to the Mayor’s house or scooping up after the large-breed canine of a local CEO. My luck changed when I took my destiny in my own hands.

At the advice of a college friend, I started attending webinar series about marketing. The webinars were downloadable, so I could watch them whenever it was convenient for me. And if I learned the best new strategies for how to market a product or service, then I could better market my own services during my next job interview.

I’ve always heard the phrase you get what you pay for, and with this course being free I did not expect a lot in the way of presentation. The web conference review sounded good though, so I gave it a shot, and I am so glad that I did. I learned a lot by watching those first webisodes, but the first lesson was the most important.

That first course gave some useful advice, but the real meat of the information was in the second course - which was available for the low, low cost of $9.99. I gave up a couple of hours’ worth of pizza tips in exchange for even better marketing advice, and feel it was worth every penny.

Creating a Webinar to Market Your Products and Services

Without watching the free course first, I never would have paid for the second one. Watching the first course made all the difference! And it gave me an idea. If this guy could entice me to spend money listening to his advice, why couldn’t I do the same thing? Here are the steps I took:

• Do all your research beforehand, organizing your notes into a working outline
• Choose three potential webinar content ideas based on your products & services
• Do a Google search and see how many others show an interest in each idea
• Through process of elimination, select the idea that is the most popular
• Design a course based around that idea that is unique enough to catch attention
• Make your web course, using either free online program or downloadable software
• Hold a dress rehearsal for your webinar with some coworkers or friends
• After you correct any errors, it’s time to start marketing

Sadly, I was not able to give up my “career” of delivering pizzas after posting a couple of webinar courses to the internet. Even though I had a great topic and came across as a perfect juxtaposition of charisma and professionalism, people just weren’t buying into my plan.

The reason is because I was not marketing my webinar. I was failing to use the very techniques that led me to create my own webinar in the first place! Since I’d already bought into the marketing webinars, I went back and reviewed them again, this time watching with a more critical eye.

I put the techniques into place and created a marketing strategy that was foolproof. You could even say it was “pizza delivery guy proof”. After a while, I did begin to see a return on my investment. And when I finally landed a job that involved going into an office, I had the benefit of a whole new set of skills that eluded me through all my years in college.
