Mobiles phones were primarily intended to give you connectivity while on the move. That they do, little you need to doubt about that, but over a period, they have come to acquire other uses as well. Thanks to the advent of smartphone, you can now save money with them, do shopping, play music, watch videos, etc. But, smartphones themselves guzzle tons of money by way of data charges. If you plan to get a little thrifty, you should first start examining how you use the smartphone itself, especially how you can economize on data consumption. Go on a data diet immediately if you are billed based on data consumption. If you are not billed based on data consumed, then you should consider tethering to a laptop or your personal computer, and save on internet connection at home. Remember that smartphones are bandwidth hungry devices, and you may not even be aware of it. Data consumption shoots to high levels when you use apps, because, every time you use them, they will send out and receive large volumes of data which ultimately adds to your bill. That is the reason why you may have to be prudent when you use them.
Often it is better, to choose a high volume data connection for the simple reason that they cost you less in terms of unit charges. For example, if you are charged $15 for 500 MB of data and $20 for 3 GB, then it makes sense to go for the latter. At times you can go off grid to save on data charges or even use public WiFi free, though they may not live up to your expectations in terms of speed. Another way to save money is not to use your smartphone for watching TV. A better option will be to preload a movie or show and watch it; they will not cost you a dime, except for the rental. Here are two ways in which you can save money with your smartphone, especially when you do shopping. But, to save money, you will have to spend some money in buying apps. The free apps may appear sweet, but in the long run, they seldom serve any purpose. There are some excellent apps available in the internet that helps you compare prices while shopping. They are simple to use and you can use them for making price comparison across different stores. All that you need to do is either key in the price or simply click on the price tag, and you will get a list of stores that sell the same product at a lesser price. Make use of this feature for saving money. There are some apps that help you locate the right ATMs. Keep one handy on your smartphone. Did you know that you can save up to $3 a transaction if you are not using an ATM outside of your home bank? Apps will help you locate the nearest home bank on real time basis, and some apps even have it on their database included in the app. Sometimes you may not even have to buy an app; your bank will give you one free of charge.
