Freelancing can be a great line of work for almost anybody. The “only” challenge is to find something you’re good at and something that can be monetized at the same time. Your standard day job might, therefore, not be the best subject for freelancing. Not everything people do as a job can become a successful freelancing career. However, choosing the area is only one issue new freelancers have to face. There are also things like finding clients, launching a website, managing your business, and so on. And this is exactly what I’m presenting in this short article. What follows are 4 tips for better freelancing results. 1. Build credibilityGood freelancers have credibility. That’s why people want to do business with them. However, credibility is not claimed, it is earned. There are two ways of earning credibility in the freelancing world. Approach #1. Launch a website talking about things related to the niche where you’re freelancing. If you’re a freelance writer, for example, you can launch a blog about writing or some other related topic. This way, you earn credibility when people enjoy reading your content. Focus on providing quality and relevant advice (the more “how to” articles the better). Approach #2. Get a number of initial clients and list them in a portfolio … again, on your website (a website is crucial for freelancers). You can ask for some testimonials to display them in your portfolio as well. When new clients browse your portfolio they’re starting to think that if you were doing business with all these companies, then they should probably do business with you too. 2. Give away free samplesGiving away free samples is the oldest trick in the book for every business. Free stuff always attracts people. Humans simply can’t resist something that’s free. No matter what your area of freelancing is you can always find something you can share for free. For example, writers can share sample articles on any given topic that the audience can then use for republication. By the way, this should also build you some additional visibility. In the end, your freebie doesn’t have to be big, but it should be at least a little useful. 3. Manage your time properlyFreelancers are considered free people who don’t have to get up in the morning and can do their jobs from coffee shops and such. This is essentially true, but not until you figure out how to manage your time. The approach that I advise is to set your work into a couple of individual blocks. Each block will take you two and a half hours. Here’s how it’s done: Start by working for 50 minutes. Then take a 10 minute break. Then work for another 50 minutes. And then take a 30 minute break. Start all over again. This way of working is the secret of how I’m getting things done, so at least give it a try. 4. Manage your financesDepending on the country you live in there are surely different rules regarding freelancing and its regulations. But there are some things you’ll most likely have to face no matter where you are. And that is invoicing. Thankfully, these days, you can send invoices online and don’t have to print anything out. Services like Freshbooks make all the financial boring stuff much simpler. Of course, you can always hire an accountant, but if you’re just starting out I don’t think you have the budget for that.
