Since we’re doing screen captures videos here, you’re going to need some resources to actually make these videos. My recommendation, simply because this is what I personally have used and has worked well for me, is SnagIt. This is paid screen capture software, but only costs a one-time fee of $50, which is still much cheaper than shelling out $300 for Camtasia. The video quality is more than enough for our purposes, and editing is a breeze. Another feature that I really like about SnagIt is that once you are done recording and editing your video, you can instantly upload it to your YouTube account right from within the software in 1click. SnagIt allows you to create videos of unlimited length. If you’re really serious about succeeding with this method, and you know that you are going to stick with it, than SnagIt will be a wise investment. What’s better is that you can get a Free 30 Day Trial of SnagIt here: http://www.techsmith.com/download/snagit/default.asp 30 days should be more than enough time for you to implement this method multiple times and land your first client, making it a no-brainer for you to continue with the paid version after the 30 day trial.
However, if you have ZERO budget and don’t want to go with SnagIt, there is a free alternative that I have used in the past: Camstudio. You can download it here: http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ Drawbacks of camstudio include lesser video quality, it only produces videos in avi file formats, and does not allow you to do any editing. You need to download some sort of video editing software to edit videos that you make with Camstudio. One that I have used before with success is VirtualDub. This is also free to download and you can download it here: http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ Please note that VirtualDub can only be used on windows, not on Macs. VirtualDub does have a slight learning curve if you’re new to that type of thing, but is relatively easy to use once you play around with it a little bit. Also, it goes without saying that you’ll of course need a microphone for your computer to record the audio for your videos. I recommend a headset microphone as opposed to a desktop microphone for more consistent audio quality. You definitely do not need anything fancy here at all. I picked up a $20 set at Best Buy which has worked absolutely fine for me. BIO: Sussan Deyhim is from Health Definition and a University Lecturer.
