You must have heard a lot of grandmother tales that say eating a lot of carrots will keep your eyes healthy; there may be a germ of truth in it. However, vision care is not only about eating carrots. Eye defects are believed to be more hereditary in nature, and could even be congenital. The sad part is that you just can’t turn a blind eye to such situations. When you come to think of it eyesight is probably more precious than anything else on earth. Are you prepared for such a situation? Even getting a minor eye defect fixed costs a lot of money these days.
Take a look at the real situation
Statistics say that only a third of the population has perfect eyesight, so, what if you are one of the remaining two thirds that needs some sort of vision care? You may need to wear glasses or contact lenses depending on your choice and your ability to spend. The only way that you will be saving money is by getting suitable vision insurance coverage. With plans that include cost of treatment, including surgery and cost of contact lenses or eyeglasses you could be pretty much well covered.
Keep an eye on the kids
If either or both parents have some eye defect, chances are that your kids could inherit it from you. It would make sense to be well covered as your kids are probably going to need an update on glasses every year besides treatment and surgical intervention. Yes, vision care for the kids is equally, if not more important and having an appropriate plan to cover any contingency is really smart.
Look before you leap
There is no tearing hurry to buy the prescribed eyeglasses or contacts, though vision care is important it is equally important to shop around to find the best supplier who is in the network of insurance. You will definitely be saving money if you take the extra effort to locate a discount store that offers discounts on eyewear. Buying at your ophthalmologists may be easier though a bit more expensive. There a lot of online sellers, however, it is not a great idea to buy a pair of eyeglasses without trying them on.
A hawk’s eye on how much to spend
Vision care is more about correcting a defect in the eye than wearing fancy eyewear. You will be saving money when you avoid buying fancy stuff and add-ons that run up the cost. For instance, it is not terribly important that you wear photochromic lenses that darken in the sun and lighten indoors or when dark. You will get used to light and dark over a period of time, hence it is prudent to avoid unnecessary expenditure on such things including fancy frames (even of gold). Maybe horn-rimmed spectacles are out of fashion; however there are a thousand other options you could think of.
